How do we age fish?
The most common and reliable way to age a fish unfortunately means killing the specimen. This method requires the inner ear bone, called an otolith. This ear bone grows throughout the fish's life, each year putting down a new layer. These layers are like the rings in a tree trunk, and by counting them we can get an accurate estimate of that fish's age.
Why is this mat important?
Many of our favourite fish in SA are slow growing and late maturing, not to mention that our bag and size limits are outdated. Many of the fish being kept haven't had a chance to breed or are older than the angler! This large mat also helps to keep the fish off the sand or rocks, preventing infection. Remember to keep the mat and your hands wet ; lets release strong fish!
Works on the following species :
Red Roman; Bronze Bream; Belman; Galjoen; Shad; Grunter; White Musselcracker; Black Musselcracker; Garrick; White Steenbras; Dusky Kob .
